McCallum Nets Career-High to Lead Jacksonville Past Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (10-12, 3-4 ASUN) made it back-to-back victories on the road on Saturday evening when it took care of business at Kennesaw State (1-19, 0-7 ASUN) on the strength of its best shooting performance of the season, 83-64.

The Dolphins matched the season high they set on Thursday night at Lipscomb by throwing in 31 field goals but did so while shooting a season-high 55.4 percent from the floor. The 31 field goals were supported by nine triples; three of which came out of the hands of DeAnthony McCallum (Hodges Mazda Player of the Game) who canned a career-best 22 points to lead the Dolphins in scoring.

McCallum was 8-11 from the floor and 3-4 from deep while going 3-3 at the free throw line in an incredibly efficient effort that also included three assists. Destin Barnes chipped in 15 for his 11th double figure effort of the season and David Bell added 11 but saw his streak of three-straight double-doubles come to a close by pulling down just five boards. Bryce Workman picked up the slack on the glass, securing a team-high eight rebounds to go with nine points, coming up just shy of his second double-double of the season. Mo Arnold, making his second-straight start, handed out a career-best four assists.

Kennesaw State held its only lead at the 16:25 mark in the first half, despite preseason All-Conference choice Tyler Hooker dropping 30. The Dolphins trailed 5-4 at that stage but a McCallum three ball on the other end put his team ahead for good.

The offensive effort from JU was surgical at times. By halftime, the lead had grown to 17 on the strength of 10 assists against just five turnovers. Jacksonville went on to hand out a season-high-tying 16 assists. It's the fifth time they've achieved that mark this season.

Jacksonville earned its 21st victory all-time over the Owls on Saturday and have now won four-straight in the series. Kennesaw State will visit Swisher Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 22. Next up for Jacksonville is another in-state rival, FGCU, on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. The Dolphins will be looking for its first win over the Eagles since Feb. 1, 2016.

Following the results of Saturday's ASUN action, the Dolphins will rest just two games out of first place in the league with nine to play.
