Roberts and Quinata Make Big Plays To Grab Two Victories at Mardi Gras Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOBILE, ALA- Jacksonville Softball continued their road trip on Friday afternoon at the first day of the Mardi Gras Invite in Mobile, Alabama. The Dolphins dominated in both games securing two victories to improve to a 9-4 record.

"Skylar and Alyssa gave us two great starts today. We had quality at bats up and down the line all day long. Hannah had a big day at the plate driving in a bunch of runs. A few kids battled through some things today and showed incredible toughness," commented Head Coach Erica Ayers.

Game One

Skylar Whitty struck out five and allowed six hits in a complete game 3-2 win over Stephen F. Austin on Friday morning.

No hits were recorded for either team until the top of the third when JU opened scoring.

It was a team effort to bring Serena Quinata home after she doubled to center field. Makenzie Buss singled to second base on a bunt allowing Quinata to advance to third. Buss stole second on the next play while Kayana Perez walked. Quinata scored after Kassidy Cross lined out to shortstop and Perez and Buss advanced to second and third on a fielding error by the Lumberjacks first basemen.

SFA answered back in the bottom of the third with one run from Alex Hedspeth.

Quinata and Perez went to work again in the top of the fifth to record a pair of runs to break the tie and grab a hold of the lead. After singling to center field and walking Quinata and Perez made it home after Hannah Roberts knocked a single to left field.

SFA made late push in the bottom of the seventh when Madison Clements scored on a wild pitch, but their effort came up short and JU grabbed the 3-2 victory after M Bennett grounded out to Makenzie Buss for the third and final out.

Game two

Jacksonville kept the momentum going into game two and came out victorious with a 6-1 victory over University of South Alabama.

Alyssa Bilodeau had the defense locked down as she kept the Jaguars scoreless through the bottom of the fifth. In her sixth complete game she struck out 11 batters while only allowing three hits.

While Bilodeau kept the Jaguar hitters in order, Jacksonville's offense continued to produce at a high level. The third inning proved especially friendly to the Dolphins as they collected a total of 5 runs on 4 hits.

Serena Quinata led things off for JU when she singled up the middle and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Darakjian.  The bases became loaded for JU after Makenzie Buss walked and Kayana Perez singled through the left side. Jacksonville grabbed the 1-0 lead when Quinata reached home after Kassidy Cross walked. With bases still loaded Hannah Roberts hit a grand slam to left field batting in the three runners on base. Perez, Buss, and Cross all scored to give Jacksonville the 5-0 lead.

USA was able to piece together one run in the bottom of the fifth.

JU tallied one more run for good measure in the top of the seventh. Cambria Arturo scored on a fielding error after she entered to pinch run for Hannah Roberts at second base.

Jacksonville will face Stephen F. Austin again tomorrow morning at 10AM before playing Memphis at 12:15PM.
