SPARKS, Md. – Four players scored multiple goals as the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team dominated on neutral turf with a 15-8 win over Robert Morris, Sunday afternoon on Tierney Field at the home of the US Lacrosse Headquarters.
"Today was a significant win for our program against an established program and coaching staff at Robert Morris. I have a great admiration for how those guys conduct themselves, and I knew today would require an impressive performance if we wanted to find a win," noted head coach
John Galloway following the win.
Redshirt-senior
Evan Tyler continued his climb to the 100-point milestone with a team-high six points (5 goals, 1 assist), while junior
Jack Dolan chipped in five points of his own (3g, 2a). Tyler now sits at 86 career points, and Dolan at 71, going into next weekend's 9th Moe's Lacrosse Classic.
Especially impressive on the clearing game, the Dolphins (2-1) finished 24-26, including 12-12 over the second and third quarters. Jacksonville also held the advantage on ground balls (42-35) and faceoff wins (15-12) as freshman
Nathan Kapp finished 13-21 with eight ground balls to control the X.
"Our offense shot the ball well and we were led again by our leaders,
Jack Dolan and
Evan Tyler.
Nathan Kapp was fantastic coming in relief at the X and showed that he could play at this level. I thought our defense bought into the game plan and held a top-10 offense to under 10 goals. A lot of that had to do with the play of
Tyler Morris and
Hunter Sells," added Galloway.
In his first start since last year's season opener, junior close defender
Tyler Morris had an exceptional outing with five ground balls and two caused turnovers – both career-highs. In the crease, senior
Hunter Sells collected 14 saves, including six in the second half alone, to go along with four ground balls and a caused turnover to earn the win.
"The special part of this group is we don't rely on one man to be special. We believe in each other," stated Galloway. "We let things get away from us in the second half, but this group will come back to work tomorrow because they love each other and believe in each other. It is a pleasure to be there coach!"
It was all Dolphins in the opening quarter as Jacksonville quickly got on the board with a 7-1 run highlighted by a hat trick from Tyler (12:37, 10:10, 0:47) and a pair of goals from junior
Jeremy Winston (11:25, 1:42) and freshman
Jacob Greiner (6:01, 0:18). After he dished a pair of assists to Greiner in the first, Dolan buried back-to-back goals of his own at 10:28 and 8:56 in the second to keep JU in control, 9-2, at halftime.
While the teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the third, senior
Jimmy Hoffman (8:38), Dolan (7:10) and Tyler (3:31) all found the back of the net to close out the quarter. The Colonials (1-1) found a resurgence in the fourth period behind three-straight goals, but with 1:13 remaining, Tyler tucked in his fifth goal of the game and hand the Dolphins their second-straight victory, 15-8.
Greiner finished the day with four points (3g, 1a), while junior
Dixon Smith picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers to help control the Colonials.
Ryan Smith led RMU with two goals and one assist, while goalie Ben Savick finished the day with 15 saves between the pipes.
The Dolphins return to action next Saturday, Feb. 29 when they welcome Utah for the 9th Moe's Lacrosse Classic. With three area high school games on tap for the event as part of the JU Lacrosse Capital of the South: High School Series, the Dolphins and Utes will face off at 3 p.m. EST.
