DELAND, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's basketball team (18-10, 10-5 ASUN) continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon when rolled past Stetson (12-16, 6-9 ASUN), 71-57, highlighted by a historic effort on the boards from
Jada Perry.
Perry scored 14 points, reaching double figures for the first time since Feb. 3 opposite FGCU but grabbed a game, season and career-high 17 rebounds to produce her fourth double-double of the season. That type of rebounding total has been reached by only a handful of players in Dolphin basketball history, it ranks fourth all-time and falls just three short of the program's single-game record of 20.
Shakayla Nevitt scored 22 points to go with eight boards, two assists and two steals while
Kiara Meeks scored 14 and
Alexis Burns chipped in 10 to go with a team-high four assists. Jacksonville shot 35.0 percent from the floor and forced Stetson into 12 turnovers that turned into 10 points on the other end.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 9-2 lead in this one after Meeks got the scoring started with a triple on the first offensive possession of the game for JU. The lead remained seven, 19-12, after one quarter.
Nevitt opened up the second frame with a triple to give JU its first double-digit advantage of the afternoon. The lead held right there for nearly two minutes as the defenses battled it out until
Shekinah Rachel scored her first two points to make it a 12-point game. The Dolphins led by as many as 15 at multiple points in the second and took a 36-23 lead into halftime.
Stetson came out fiery in the third and Jacksonville needed to weather the storm. The Hatters pulled to within seven with 2:35 to go in the frame but Nevitt answered with a pair of free throws and sparked a 9-4 to close the quarter.
The JU lead dropped to 10 on multiple occasions in the fourth but that was as close as Stetson came in this one. The Dolphins were able to cruise down the stretch to win No. 18 on the season and pick up their 10th victory in ASUN play.
Jacksonville has already clinched a home game in the ASUN Championship Tournament and is in a fight with North Alabama and Liberty for the No. 2 seed behind clinched regular-season champion FGCU. The Dolphins will close out the regular season against FGCU on Monday night in Fort Myers, Fla.
