JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several program records fell Friday evening as the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team controlled the game from start to finish en route to an 18-1 victory over Hampton at D.B. Milne Field.
As a team, Jacksonville (3-2) generated the second-most shots in program history with 58 and held Hampton (0-5) to just one goal for the program's fewest goals allowed. The previous record was two, in a 14-2 win over VMI in 2016.
Individually, junior defender
Dixon Smith scored his first career goal and caused three Pirate turnovers to cement himself in history as the Dolphins' all-time career leader in caused turnovers (60) to earn
Hodges Mazda Player of the Game honors.
"I can't speak highly enough about the effort from Hampton tonight. Coach Davoe has his team competing from the opening whistle to the final buzzer regardless of the circumstance. They kicked our butt at the faceoff X and played a spirited defense," noted head coach
John Galloway. "I was proud of how our group came out in the second half, specifically on the defensive end. It was anight of firsts, with five guys registering their first goal and
Dixon Smith breaking the program record for caused turnovers. I was particularly proud of
Bo BowHunter and
Tom Heed coming into the game and contributing in multiple ways.
Mack Dickie was a menace between the lines and
Jordan Young looked like an All-American on ball. We are excited to get back to work tomorrow to prepare for a top 10 opponent [against Duke] on national tv. It doesn't get much better than that!"
It was all Jacksonville from start to finish as the Dolphins posted all three first-quarter goals with back-to-back marks from junior
Jack Dolan (7:43, 3:01) and the first of two from freshman
Jacob Greiner (2:12) for an early lead.
While Hampton got on the board with the first goal of the second quarter – a feed from Pierce Johnson to Andre Myers with 13:40 showing – the Dolphins quickly got back to work with the next six to close out the half. Redshirt-senior
Evan Tyler sparked the run at 10:23 before Smith buried a feed from Dolan just 14 seconds later, to the delight of the Jacksonville sideline. Greiner then added an assist and capped the run with his second goal of the quarter at 1:59 to help the Dolphins to a sizeable 9-1 lead at the break.
Junior
Jack Lukacovic (4:49) and senior
Brett Reilly (0:09) tacked on a pair of goals in the third, while four additional players all posted their first career goal in the fourth: sophomore
Tom Heed (14:10), senior
Andrew Davis (9:30), and freshman
Luke Robinson (6:47) and
Matt Holland (1:46).
Seniors
Hunter Sells and
Adam Baker recorded three saves each, while junior
Jack Goodwin added two in 3:03 minutes of action. Freshman goalie
Taylor Lewis also made his collegiate debut between the pipes to close out the win.
The Dolphins hit the road this coming Tuesday, March 11 as they head to Durham, N.C. to take on Duke at 6 p.m.
