Dolphins Drop Doubleheader To Colgate and Furman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Birmingham, AL - Jacksonville University softball (13-9) traveled to Birmingham, Alabama this weekend to play their second road tournament of the season. The Dolphins dropped both games against Colgate and Furman.

Game One

Game one did not go the way of Jacksonville as the Dolphins were unable to capitalize on big moments. Although the 'Phins were able to acquire base runners in five of the seven innings they ended game one with a total of 10 runners left on base.

Colgate took an early lead and continued to produce runs. Skylar Whitty started off game one for the Dolphins and went two innings before being relived by Seana Mora. Whitty left the mound after the Raiders took a 4-1 lead. Mora allowed five hits, but the damage was minimal as only one Raider run scored. Whitty and Mora worked together to strikeout five batters.

Colgate grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Dolphins, however, didn't let the Raiders hold on to the lead for very long.  The Colgate pitcher struggled to strike out the
Dolphins and was quickly dealing with loaded bases. Carolyn O'Neal scored in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Makenzie Buss.

The game went back in favor of the Raiders in the top of the third as they scored three runs on three hits to take a 4-1 lead.

Abby Genest went 2 for 3 in game one and recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to put Jacksonville within 2. Darakjian scored from third base after Genest knocked the ball into left field.

Game Two

The Dolphins and Paladins were scoreless through most of the game before a trio of runs in the top of the seventh dropped JU 3-2.

Skylar Whitty pitched a complete game for a 6th time this season. The sophomore held the Paladins scoreless to just three hits through the start of the seventh inning.

Jacksonville's late pair of runs scored in the bottom of the seventh came after Kayana Perez entered to pinch run for Hannah Roberts at first after she walked. Perez advanced to second after Madison Kennedy was served four balls and scored when Alyssa Gennaro-Ferrante reached first on a fielding error by the Furman shortstop. Leah Zatkiewicz came in to pinch run for Kennedy and reached home when Carolyn O'Neal put the ball into play with an RBI single to center field. The Dolphins still had the tying run in scoring position, but the game ended when Gennaro-Ferrante was caught stealing for the third out.

Seana Mora and Gennaro-Ferrante each went 1 for 2 at the plate and Carolyn O'Neal went 1 for 3.
