LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Jacksonville University women's basketball wrapped up their trip to Virginia Sunday against ASUN Conference leader Liberty University. The Dolphins (2-9, 0-6) made adjustments from Saturday's game and kept things close behind a career day from
Khalela Hayes, but the Flames (12-3, 8-0) depth was too much to overcome in a 78-52 contest.
The first quarter of Sunday's game nearly mirrored the opening 10 minutes from Saturday, with both teams starting slow and struggling to score points, despite quality opportunities. Liberty hit a pair of three-pointers in the first 63 seconds before going cold for close to three and a half minutes. Jacksonville took advantage and was able to knock down a pair of shots to get within two before the Flames scored nine of the next 11 points to go ahead by nine. The Dolphins responded a 7-0 run over the final three minutes to end the first period trailing 15-13.
Jacksonville tied the game at 15 on a step-back jumper from
Tamia Stallings to start things in the second quarter before LU responded with a 9-2 run to reclaim the lead at 24-17. After the teams exchanged a series of free throws,
Shekinah Rachel scored from a great pass between two defenders by
Erin Wilson in transition after a Flames turnover. Moments later, Wilson drained a three from the top of the arc to get JU back within five at 28-23. Liberty stretched their lead to end the half, scoring six in the final minute to make it 34-23.
As was the case Saturday, Liberty pulled away over the final 20 minutes to secure the win. Despite forcing 16 turnovers, Jacksonville was unable to match the scoring production of the Flames who saw 11 different players find the scoring column, including four in double-figures.
Hayes had the best game of her young JU career, finishing with a season-best 17 points, six rebounds and two assists in only 24 minutes. Wilson recorded her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season with 13 points and also had four steals. Seven different players scored for the Dolphins, who had one of their better shooting performances of the year, going 34.5% from the field.
Jacksonville will return to Swisher Gymnasium to start the month of February, welcoming the Bellarmine Knights (3-10, 3-5) for the first-ever meeting between the two institutions. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM Saturday.
