SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville University men's golf went low on Monday afternoon at the BMW Carolina Collegiate Invitational and sits fourth with one round to play.
The Dolphins closed the first round strong and took that momentum into the second round at Carolina Country Club, led by
Josef Hacker's 25-place surge up the leaderboard in round two.
Hacker matched the lowest round of his career with his second-round 68, and at 2-under for the tournament, is T11 with his teammate
Joseph Sullivan. The strong play for Hacker picked up at the tail end of his first round, when he sank birdie, his second of the day, to get to 2-over 74. From there, he birdied his first hole of the second round, sank three straight pars and went scorching through his next four, birdieing them all. After five consecutive pars took him into the back nine, he sandwiched a birdie with a pair of bogeys, the only blemish on his afternoon.
Sullivan took a unique route to his place in the standings, hitting five birdies in the morning, but dropping strokes on four holes as well. His afternoon was just as wild, as he fired seven birdies in the second round, but took an unfortunate eight on the Par-4 11th. He shot an even par 72 in the morning, before coming back in the afternoon 2-under.
Filip Raza shot even par in the both rounds, making five birdies in the morning and four more in the afternoon and is T20 heading into the final round.
Grant Haefner shaved three strokes off of his first-round score in the afternoon, making two birdies and an eagle en route to a 1-under 71 in his second round. Teammate
Alexandre Vandermoten matched his 36-hole score, shooting 1-under in the morning before mirroring Haefner's first round score in the afternoon.
Jack Neill, competing as an individual, was solid all day, shooting 1-over in the first round and 1-under in the second. He is T20 on the leaderboard after his best moment of the day came in the second round. After opening the round with a disappointing double bogey and bogey in his first three holes, he sank consecutive pars before ripping off four straight birdies to get the momentum going, and was par-or-better on 14 of his final 15 holes.
The Dolphins made the most of the long holes for the day, shooting an impressive 16-under on Par-5s as a team, best in the field. The group's 38 birdies were also tied for the most collectively on the first day.
Hacker was 2-under on Par-3s, tied for the best score on such holes for the day. Haefner was second-best overall on Par-5s, collecting a score of 5-under. Continuing the success on Par-5s, Sullivan shot 4-under, Hacker 3-under, Neill, Vandermoten and Raza 2-under.
Vandermoten's 28 pars were the second-most in the field, and Hacker's 12 birdies and Raza's 10 were second- and third-most, respectively.
Play concludes after the third round, which is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
