Fohrer Propels Dolphins to Victory Over Ospreys in River City Rumble Contest

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville's women's soccer team (7-8-3, 2-6-1 ASUN) defeated cross-town rival North Florida (9-4-3, 4-3-2 ASUN) 2-0, to claim the River City Rumble victory. The Dolphins had a stellar game all-around, but the most notable performance came from freshman Selma Fohrer. Fohrer scored the only two goals of the match, tying her career-high record for goals scored during a single game.

The first possession of the contest went to the Ospreys as North Florida took its first shot attempt at the two minute mark, which was saved by JU's starting keeper Courtney Green. North Florida managed to hold the ball on the Dolphins side of the field through the first five minutes of play. However, the Dolphins responded quickly during its first possession of the match, after Fohrer headed the ball over the Osprey's keeper from a pass by Shelby Brim to put the Dolphins up 1-0 at the seven minute mark.

North Florida began to pick up speed on offense at the 14 minute mark, as the Ospreys launched back-to-back shot attempts, one of which would make another save for Green. A few minutes later, North Florida pursued the net once more, but nothing would get past Green as she tallied her third save of the half. Over ten minutes later, Fohrer proved why she has been a key forward for the Dolphins all season long. The freshman escaped with the ball and outran two Osprey defenders to find the back of the net once again. This put the Dolphins ahead 2-0 at the 37 minute mark. Neither team was able to attempt more shots through the remainder of the half, and the Dolphins headed to the locker room holding onto a 2-0 lead.

After returning to the field, the Ospreys tried to go to battle with the Dolphins' defense. North Florida rattled off the first shot attempt of the half, which landed right into the hands of Green. At the 58 mark, JU attempted two consecutive shots to keep the ball on the Osprey's side of the field.

While the Osprey's were able to keep pressing, no shot attempt was too much for the Dolphins defense to handle. Green accumulated her fourth save on North Florida's tenth shot of the contest at the 64 minute mark, and from there it was clear the Osprey would not go down without a fight. Across the next 15 minutes of action, North Florida rattled off six shot attempts, with each ball landing just outside of the goal. Even though the Osprey out-shot the Dolphins 14-0 in the second period, JU exited the field with the victory and River City Rumble bragging rights until the next season.

This is the first time the Dolphins have defeated the Osprey since 2016.

"Our players were outstanding today, we knew it was a must-win to have a chance to make it to the postseason tournament," head coach John Constable said. "Selma has done a great job all season and today she stepped up and the team overall had a stellar performance."

Up next, the Dolphins wait to see if the team has qualified for a spot in the ASUN Conference Tournament. JU's fate will be determined once the other weekend matches come to a conclusion.Updates about the tournament will be provided once they become available.
