JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The opening weekend of the 2021 softball season is in the books and not without some twists and turns. The Jacksonville Dolphins (2-0), originally scheduled to play five games across three days, battled the elements and found a way to get two, with the finale opposite Boston College (1-3) resulting in a 3-2 victory.
The game on Sunday was moved across town to North Florida and the change of venue didn't seem to affect the effort as JU picked up where they left off when they last saw the Eagles on Friday afternoon.
Skylar Whitty got the start and stranded three runners in the first to get this one going. By the end of the game, Dolphin pitching had stranded 14 runners.
Makenzie Buss and
Allison Bratek each added a pair of hits and RBI.
Samantha Poehlman added the third RBI to complete the scoring in this one.
Alyssa Bilodeau came on in relief of Whitty to pick up the win, striking out four across 2.2 innings, allowing her first two hits and run of the season.
Seana Mora came on to earn her first save of the season, striking out two in the seventh inning.
Jacksonville got on the board first with back-to-back doubles in the second. Bratek drove in the second run of the game in the third and nearly had two RBI on the play but a JU runner was gunned down at home on a great throw from the Boston College left fielder.
The Eagles got one back in the top of the fourth, but JU answered when Buss doubled in the bottom half, driving in Mora who had entered as a pinch runner. Boston College chipped away with a run in the sixth but that was as close as it came in this one. Mora came on and locked this one down to give JU its second victory in as many games.
Next up for the Dolphins will be a trip to Gainesville to matchup with No. 7 Florida on Wednesday (Feb. 17). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
