JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University softball team (12-5) was back in action Wednesday night at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex, as they recorded an exciting, double header sweep of Chipola (7-12), capped by a walk-off win in game two.
Skylar Whitty struck out eight over 5.0 innings in game one, backed up by
Seana Mora who sat down two over 2.0 to pick up the save.
Allison Bratek, Madison Kenedy and
Madison Reynolds all contributed RBI in the three-run second to secure the win.
In that second inning, Chipola scored first in the top half. JU then followed with a single, steal, and three straight doubles to jump ahead 3-1. The pitching for both sides took over from there as JU was able to lock down, allowing just five hits in the game.
Game two provided the fireworks.
Haley Holloway was electric over 5.2 innings in the circle for Jacksonville. Things got hairy late with her team on top, nursing a 1-0 lead. Chipola chased Holloway with two runs on two hits in the top half of the sixth to move ahead 2-1. Mora came on in relief and surrendered two more runs in the top of the seventh to leave JU in a 4-1 hole with three outs left at the dish.
Madison Reynolds worked a walk to lead off the bottom half of the seventh followed by back-to-back strikeouts to bring JU to the brink, still trailing 4-1.
Kassidy Cross worked a walk, as did
Samantha Poehlman to load the bases for
Caroline Watson. She bounced a ground ball to the Chipola third baseman, but she could not find the handle and Watson reached safely on the error, scoring one, and leaving the bases loaded.
Then came
Allison Bratek, she worked a deep at-bat, fouling off pitch after pitch with the count sitting at 3-2 before winning the battle and drawing a walk, driving in another run.
Ashley Darakjian came to the plate with her team still trailing, 4-3, with two away and the bases still loaded. She powered a bloop single to left, driving in a pair and giving the Dolphins the walk-off victory.
Jacksonville makes the short trip across town this weekend for a three-game series with North Florida as ASUN play gets underway. JU will be back home on Mar. 20 for a series with Stetson.
