Late Heroics Lift Dolphins to Sweep of Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two days after taking the first two games of the series, the Jacksonville University softball team was back on the diamond at the Debbie and Fred Pruitt Softball Complex Tuesday to wrap up their first ASUN Conference home series of the season against Stetson University. The Dolphins (16-7, 4-2) and Hatters (4-12, 0-6) traded zeros nearly all game long, but in the end, Jacksonville was able to plate the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to capture the 1-0 win and sweep the series.

Offensive opportunities were hard to come by all game as both starters brought their best to the park after the two-day layoff, with just five combined baserunners in the first five innings.

Stetson notched the first hit of the day with a leadoff single in the second inning but came up empty in the inning. The Hatters had their best chance to score in the fourth inning after a pair of singles put runners at the corners with one out, but Alyssa Bilodeau would have none of it, striking out the next two batters to keep Stetson off the scoreboard.

JU broke into the hit column in the fifth inning when Samantha Poehlman doubled to right center with one away, but Stetson managed to work around it and keep the game scoreless.

The Hatters had another opportunity in the sixth inning, following a two-out double and a walk, but once more Bilodeau worked out of the inning with a strikeout.

Following a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, Allison Bratek led off the home half with an infield single third base. Kassidy Cross advanced Bratek to second with a sacrifice bunt and a Caroline Watson groundout to the right side moved the winning run to third with two away. Stetson chose to take the bat out of Poehlman's hands, issuing an intentional walk to bring Makenzie Buss to the plate with two outs. After working the count to 3-1, Buss drove a ball deep to the right center gap that tailed back towards centerfield just enough that it found green between the two outfielders to plate the go-ahead run and complete the series sweep.

Bilodeau (7-5) went the distance for the second time in the series, notching another 14 strikeouts along the way against just four hits and one walk. The two starting pitchers combined for 23 strikeouts in the contest and allowed just seven hits between them.

Jacksonville continues it's seven-game homestand Saturday with more ASUN Conference action as FGCU comes to town for doubleheader action starting at 1 PM.
