DELAND, Fla. – After an unexpected off weekend last week, the Jacksonville University women's basketball team was back in action on the road for the final weekend of the regular season, taking on Stetson University from the Edmunds Center. The Hatters (8-12, 6-9) used a big first quarter to take a lead they would maintain until the end, sending the Dolphins (3-15, 1-12) to an 89-64 setback.
After Jacksonville knocked down a pair of early three-pointers from
Alexis Pierce and
Johné Stewart to take a 6-0 lead, Stetson rattled off eight-straight to make it 12-6 and take a lead they would hold the rest of the way. The Hatters went 11-16 from the floor and 6-8 from beyond the arc to make it 31-13 after 10 minutes.
Three different players scored JU's first three field goals to open the second quarter behind
Khalela Hayes,
DeShari Graham and
Shekinah Rachel. Stetson kept the Dolphins at arms reach and took a 52-28 lead into the intermission.
Jacksonville came out to start the third quarter looking to claw their way back into the game, shooting nearly 39% from the field in the quarter. However, Stetson shot over 50% in the third quarter and extended their lead by as much as 33 before the Dolphins scored the final six points of the quarter to make it 73-46.
The fourth quarter saw Jacksonville outscore Stetson, led by
Da'Nasia Shaw. Last year's ASUN leader in three-point percentage played in her third game of the season Saturday in her return from injury and scored eight of her 10 points in the final stanza, including a pair of three-pointers.
Ashley Malone connected from long range with 30 seconds to go before Stetson scored with 10 seconds remaining to get to the final tally of 89-64.
Graham lead the Dolphins' scoring effort with 15 points on 6-13 shooting and added five rebounds and three assists. Pierce posted 11 points and went 3-6 from beyond the arc with a pair of blocks. Shaw netted a season-high 10 points as eight different players found their way into the scoring column for Jacksonville.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 PM again at the Edmunds Center to conclude the 2020-21 regular season.
