Big First Inning Lifts Dolphins Past Rattlers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Offense came early and often Saturday night for the Jacksonville University softball team as they played host to Florida A&M University on day two of the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge. A 12-run outburst in the opening frame of the night propelled the Dolphins (10-5) to an 18-0 run-rule victory over the Rattlers (0-7).

After Skylar Whitty worked a scoreless top half of the inning, the Victoria Rodebaugh got things going with a ringing one-out single to left field. Kassidy Cross followed with a single of her own before Samantha Poehlman singled home Rodebaugh for the opening marker of the game. Moments later, Hannah Roberts went deep for the second time on the weekend, belting a towering three-run homerun to straightaway centerfield to make it 4-0 Jacksonville. Caroline Watson followed with a double to left center and scored on an Allison Bratek single after getting to third on a passed ball. Following a Florida A&M pitching change, Madison Kennedy singled before Seana Mora was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Bratek scored during the next at bat in a what can only be described as an unusual sequence. With Makenzie Buss at the plate, Buss though the 2-0 offering grazed her leg and she trotted down to first base. All runners advanced but the defense realized it was only a 3-0 count with the pitch ruled a ball, and so ensued a scramble that saw the Rattlers try to get an out on the play that ended up with Bratek scoring and Kennedy and Mora ending up in scoring position with the score at 6-0.

After Buss made it to first via a free pass, Rodebaugh walked to force home Kennedy and make it 7-0. Following a fielder's choice force out at home, Buss scored on a wild pitch prior to Poehlman drawing a walk to reload the bases for Roberts. With one big fly in the inning, Roberts stepped into the box and promptly left the yard again, this time with a grand slam to right center to make it 12-0 Jacksonville in the first inning.

Five more runs came across in the second inning for JU. Reynolds and Carolyn O'Neal were both plunked with bases loaded to force home runs before Ashley Darakjian doubled home a pair by splitting the gap in right center for a double to make it 16-0. Kari Holzrichter singled home O'Neal with two outs in the inning push the lead to 17-0.

JU tacked on another run in the fourth inning, as Kailey Harrigan worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home Darakjian for the final marker of the game.

Haley Holloway wrapped things up, getting a flyout to cap her two innings of relief. Whitty (4-1) picked up the win, going three innings and striking out four as she faced the minimum. The duo allowed just two Florida A&M hits in the ballgame.

Nine different players found their way into the hit column, with Kennedy, Darakjian and Roberts all going 2-2 in the game. 12 different Dolphins scored a run the game, with six players scoring twice. Roberts finished the night one RBI shy of the program's single-game record of eight.

The Dolphins will wrap up their weekend at home Sunday, taking on USC Upstate in doubleheader action starting at 12:30 from the Debbie and Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
