Dolphins Sent to Setback at Hands of Hatters

DELAND, Fla. – The Jacksonville University volleyball team was back in action once more Saturday at the Edmunds Center for their second match of the season against Stetson University. The Dolphins (2-8, 0-6) paced the Hatters (4-3, 3-3) for most of the evening, but fell in straight sets (25-19, 25-11, 25-19).

Things were close in set one to begin the night, with the Dolphins and Hatters matching each other point for point in the early going. An Autumn DeSantis block put JU up by two before SU went a 4-1 run to retake the lead. Kills from Hannah Edelman and Isa Dostal kept the Dolphins within striking distance before Stetson was able to gain a little cushion, scoring six of the next nine to lead 13-10. A ball handling error and a kill from Jenna McNamara brought Jacksonville back within one but that would be as close as things would get in the night's opening frame, as the Hatters held on to take the set 25-19.

The Hatters came out swinging in the second set, racing out to a big lead early as they managed to keep the Dolphins from settling into any rhythm offensively as they went on to win the second frame 25-11.

Jacksonville showed renewed vigor to open the third set, gaining the early edge and leading for most of the early phases of the set. Sydney Bolding, McNamara and Edelman paced the Dolphins while Barbora Romancova and Camryn Honn also got in on the action to put the Dolphins ahead 14-13. As things looked to be trending up, Stetson got hot and put together a 9-2 series to swing things back in their favor, using that momentum to take the set 25-19.

Isa Dostal led Jacksonville with six kills while Edelman registered five kills and six digs for the evening. Honn dished out 23 assists along with six digs, three kills and a pair of service aces. Freshman Gyrani Rogers posted a career-best 13 digs while Addyson Lewis added five of her own. Eight different players registered kills for JU in the match.

The Dolphins and Hatters will meet again on Wednesday at Swisher Gymnasium, with first serve scheduled for 6 PM.
