JU Sweeps Wofford at Home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It came down to the final pitch, but Jacksonville University baseball grinded out a 4-2 win over Wofford on Sunday at John Sessions Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins (3-8) completed the sweep over the Terriers, thanks in part to strong starting pitching again and key two-out RBIs.

"These guys are continuing to learn each other," said Head Coach Chris Hayes. "We've got a ton of familiar faces, but then there are a lot of new guys as well in our dugout and they've got to figure out how they are going to jell together.

"Great opportunity for us to grow, recover from the tough start that we had and I'm really encouraged about where we are headed."

Mason Adams (1-0) drew the start for JU today, and in his first starting nod with the Dolphins did not disappoint. He allowed only one baserunner through the first three innings, striking out three in the process.

On the other side, Jacksonville struggled early at the plate against Wofford, but broke through in the third. Blake Delamielleure reached on an infield single to start the inning. He stole second, and with two-outs, Ruben Someillan laced a double into the right centerfield gap to plate him and put JU up 1-0 after three.

Adams continued his strong work to keep Jacksonville on top. He struck out another Terrier and allowed only one more baserunner, on a hit batsman, through the sixth inning.

Wofford led off the seventh with a single, its first hit of the day, but the runner was immediately erased on a 3-6-1 double play. Adams finished the day allowing no runs and one hit with four strikeouts through seven strong innings.

Jacksonville's big inning came in the bottom of the fourth. Delamielleure again got it started, reaching on a hit by pitch to start the frame. After a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position, pinch-hitter Tyler McKenna ripped a single to right to put runners at the corners. A strikeout made it two outs, but Cory Heffron was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Tommy Joseph drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0. Trace Burchard greeted the new Wofford pitcher with a double over the third baseman's head into left to plate two more and push the lead to 4-0.

Wofford got one off of Christian Graham in the eighth, but Sam Brunnig came in and got the final out of the inning to strand two.

Again, in the ninth, Wofford threatened, and scored a run. They had the tying run on first when Avery Love picked up a strikeout to end it and earn the save.
