JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball dropped its series-opener to Stetson 11-1 on Thursday night at John Sessions Stadium.
The Dolphins (6-16, 0-4) had trouble coming up with hits with runners in scoring position throughout the game, while the Hatters collected several big innings.
"It didn't go our way tonight," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes. "Offensively, we didn't do enough early to put any pressure on them."
Stetson scratched across its first run off of
Tyler Santana (3-4) in the second inning and kept the pressure on the rest of the game. A solo home run to lead off the frame made it 1-0, and the Hatters tacked on another in the third, when a single, walk and wild pitch in succession to start the inning set up an RBI single to right. A strong throw by
Blake DeLamielleure to the plate nabbed the second runner trying to score and Santana held them to one.
Jacksonville turned walks to
Cory Heffron and DeLamielleure into runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but the Dolphins were held hitless and stayed scoreless.
Stetson separated in the fifth. A one-out walk was followed by a single to right field, then an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. JU could not turn a double play that would have ended the inning on a high chopper to second, and a bloop single to left scored two more to extend the advantage to 5-0.
JU threatened again in the sixth, when
Dakota Julylia and
Christian Coipel strung together back-to-back singles with one-out, but again, they were left stranded.
The Hatters extended their lead in the seventh. A leadoff single was followed by a roller to short that the runner beat out at first to avoid the double play. A steal and a deep fly to center advanced the runner to third, and after an intentional walk, the Dolphins went to the pen.
Jagger McCoy surrendered a double to right to plate two and a single into left scored another and Stetson lead 8-0.
Stetson scored three more in the eighth on a two-RBI triple to right center and an RBI groundout.
Jacksonville scored in the bottom of the eighth, when Julylia and Coipel again strung together back-to-back base hits, DeLamielleure drew a walk to load the bases, and a wild pitch brought pinch-runner
Kyle Richardson in to score.
