JU Nipped in Extras at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel scored two in the ninth and one in the 11th to prevail 3-2 in extra innings over Jacksonville University baseball on Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The Dolphins (7-22) scored both of its runs in the first, and could not hold the slim lead late, despite strong pitching throughout the evening.

The night started with a bang, as Ruben Someillan led off with a single and Jesus Pacheco followed that up with a double to put runners at second and third. Jackson Grabsky grounded out to drive in the first run and Duncan Hunter hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in the first.

Tyler Naumann started for JU and did his job and then some all evening. After a 1-2-3 first inning, Naumann allowed one base runner in each of the four innings of work after that, but nothing more. He also fanned a career-best seven over his five innings of scoreless baseball on the mound.

Tyler Santana relieved Naumann in the sixth, and sat down the Bulldogs in order before Mason Adams allowed a single to lead off the seventh, but stranded the runner there. Mike Cassala took over on the mound in the eighth and allowed only a two-out single.

Cassala started the ninth, retiring the first two batters, before a two-out single and walk led to Jagger McCoy coming on in relief. He walked a man to load the bases and a two-RBI single tied it and sent the game into extras.

Jacksonville threatened with a runner in scoring position in both the 10th and 11th, but ultimately it was the home team who loaded the bases with one-out before winning the game on a bunt to first.

THREE STRIKES

  • It was Jacksonville's first extra-inning game of the season, and first since falling to #2 Florida 4-3 on February 19, 2020 in Gainesville, Fla.
  • Ruben Someillan used a three-hit night, his team-best third of the year, to extend his on-base streak to 29 games
  • Trace Burchard worked behind the dish for the first time in his JU career, coming on as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning
