Dolphins Use Longball to Power Past Hatters in Series Opener

DELAND, Fla. – After stepping out of conference play Wednesday evening, the Jacksonville University softball team resumed their ASUN Conference slate Friday evening as they hit the road for their second series of the season with Stetson University. Despite falling behind early, the Dolphins (18-10, 6-4) powered their way to the lead behind three homeruns to take game one over the Hatters (5-15, 1-9) by a score of 7-2.

The Hatters recorded the first runs of the evening with a one-out homerun to centerfield off of starter Alyssa Bilodeau to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Dolphins were held scoreless until the third inning, when Samantha Poehlman went deep to the left center gap off of the scoreboard for her second homerun of the season to half the deficit and make it a 2-1 contest.

After two scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth innings, the Dolphins evened things at 2-2 when Caroline Watson went deep on the second pitch in the sixth out to straightaway centerfield for her first career homerun at Jacksonville. Makenzie Buss followed with a hit by pitch before Kassidy Cross worked a walk and Ashley Darakjian reached on a bunt single to load the bases for Madison Kennedy. The Dolphins' backstop came through, delivering a sacrifice fly to left that was deep enough to plate Buss from third without a play at the plate to give JU a 3-2 lead.

Jacksonville broke things wide open in the seventh inning, scoring four runs to all but seal the win. Allison Bratek led off the inning with an infield single to third before Poehlman worked a full-count walk to bring Watson back to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Watson got around on another pitch, this time driving it high off the videoboard in left center for a three-run shot and her second homerun of the game. Buss reached on a throwing error four pitches later and scored when Cross doubled down the left field line into the corner to make it a 7-2 game.

Seana Mora (3-0), who entered in the second inning in relief of Bilodeau, worked six scoreless innings of relief to help the Dolphins rally from their early deficit. The right-handers scattered five hits and allowed two walks while striking out a pair of Hatters.

Watson went 2-4 with four runs driven in while scoring a pair, as Bratek also turned in a 2-4 evening with a run scored. Cross went 3-3 with a RBI and Poehlman went 1-2 with an RBI, two runs and a pair of walks to her credit.

The series will conclude Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 PM.
