Dolphins’ Bats Go Quiet in Midweek Loss to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – After having a weekend off, the Jacksonville University softball team returned to the diamond as they began their final road trip of the regular season Wednesday evening against Georgia Southern. The Dolphins' (22-14) bats were held in check by the Eagles' (11-22) pitching all game long, falling by a score of 6-0 at Eagle Field.

Hannah Roberts got things going in the first inning for JU with a double that just missed leaving the yard by a matter of inches as it hit high off the fence in left field. Seana Mora entered to pinch run for Roberts but nothing came of the two-out hit as Georgia Southern was able to work out of the inning.

The Eagles took the lead in the second inning, scoring three times on four base hits as things got going with a steal of home on a designed baserunning play with runners at first and third.

The two sides exchanged zeros until the fifth inning when Georgia Southern got to reliever Alyssa Bilodeau for two runs to extend their lead to 5-0.

Makenzie Buss lined a single into centerfield in the sixth but was stranded as JU struggled to solve Georgia Southern pitching. The Eagles added another run to make it 6-0 in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball with bases loaded.

Samantha Poehlman led off the seventh inning with a walk with hopes of starting a late rally, but it was not to be as Georgia Southern rolled a double play and ended the game with a strikeout.

Mora (6-1) took the loss in the circle for the first time this season, allowing three runs in three innings on six hits. Bilodeau worked two innings in relief of Mora, striking out five Eagles while allowing two runs on three hits. Skylar Whitty worked the sixth inning, allowing an unearned run on two hits.

Up next, the Dolphins head to Fort Myers for their final ASUN Conference series of the season against South Division leader FGCU. Action gets underway Saturday with doubleheader action scheduled to get underway at 12 PM.
