JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The path to the ASUN men's soccer championship trophy will run through Jacksonville. The Jacksonville University men's soccer team (4-4-1, 4-2 ASUN) defeated North Florida (4-3-2, 2-2-2 ASUN) at Southern Oak Stadium on Saturday night, 1-0, to clinch the top seed in the South Division of the ASUN and earn home field for the quarterfinals of the ASUN Championship on Saturday, Apr. 10.
Jacksonville's
Joshua Moreira with one touch fired a rocket to the back of the net, less than two minutes into the game, off a feed from
Cao Chaves and from there, the defense took over.
Matt Levy made four saves in goal, three in the second half to secure the shutout. The Dolphin defense did not allow a goal at home in three regular season ASUN contests, outscoring opponents, 6-0.
"It's incredible to be able to go through a whole season with all of this adversity and come out with four wins in conference play, undefeated at home in conference play and with three shutouts," head coach Mauricio Ruiz said. "I'm just proud of the boys for staying together. Every team has struggled through different things and these boys are not exempt from that. I'm so proud of the integrity and character they've showed as a group all season."
The next step in the journey will be to host the 2021 ASUN Men's Soccer Championship Quarterfinal on Saturday, Apr. 10. The top-seeded Dolphins will square off with fourth-seeded Stetson Hatters at a time that will be announced later on this week. Jacksonville outscored Stetson, 5-0, in two meetings during the regular season.
North Florida will travel to FGCU on the other side of the bracket. In the North Division, Liberty will matchup with Lipscomb for a spot in the semifinals. Bellarmine advances to the semi's automatically by virtue of earning the top seed on the north side.
