DELAND, Fla. – Another come-from-behind effort lead Jacksonville University baseball to a 5-2 win over Stetson on Sunday at Melching Field.
The Dolphins (9-28, 2-13) scored five straight over two consecutive innings to take the lead and never looked back en route to a series win in ASUN Conference play for the first time this season.
"It was a complete team effort," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes. "We came up with big pitches in big spots.
"Out goal is to be playing our best baseball in May, and we may be trending that way."
Mike Cassala threw up three straight zeroes on the board to start the game, stranding runners on in the first two, before a double play helped him to a five-run third.
In the fourth, Cassala hit the leadoff man, who advanced around to third on consecutive groundouts back to the mound, before scoring on a two-out single to center to give the Hatters the early lead for the third straight day. Cassala then stranded two men on to keep it 1-0 after four.
It took until the sixth, but Jacksonville had an answer.
Trace Burchard, who was robbed of a base hit when his screaming line drive in the third caught by the diving Stetson shortstop, opened up the inning with a single. He advanced to second on
Blake DeLamielleure's sacrifice and scored when
Ruben Someillan banged a double off the wall in right.
The very next inning, the Dolphins took the lead for good.
Christian Coipel beat the shift with a single to right to start the frame, and
Tommy Joseph followed up with the first of his two hits. Stetson got the lead runner at third on an attempted sacrifice, but
Elias Flowers was then hit to load the bases. Burchard went the other way to drive in two to put JU on top. Another run scored when DeLamielleure's ground ball back to the mound led to only one out and
Jesus Pacheco rounded out the scoring with a seeing-eye single through the left side to score Flowers and make it 5-1.
Cassala worked into the seventh, getting the first two outs before walking a batter and giving way to
Christian Graham, who induced a lineout to end the inning.
Graham worked a scoreless eighth, before
Sam Brunnig came in the ninth, got two outs, but gave up a walk and single and
Jagger McCoy replaced him to get the final out on a flyout to right after a run scored on a passed ball.
