JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was another beautiful day for softball at the UNF Softball Complex Saturday as Jacksonville and North Florida convened for the final time in 2021 in the final game of their best-of-three ASUN divisional quarterfinal series. After splitting the first two games of the series Friday and a berth to the next round of 2021 ASUN Softball Championships on the line, the Dolphins (28-18) picked up their second 2-0 win over the Ospreys (21-23) in as many days to win the series and secure their spot among the final four teams that will convene in Kennesaw next week.
The day started in nearly identical fashion to Friday's series opener as it was a rematch between
Alyssa Bilodeau and Morgan Clausen and round two did not disappoint. The two sides traded zeros for two innings before the Dolphins took the lead in the third.
Allison Bratek led the inning off with a single to right center and looked like she might be stranded after back-to-back flyouts, but
Samantha Poehlman had other plans. The Dolphins' centerfielder lined a ball to left field just past the reach of a diving left fielder and rolled all the way into the corner, allowing Bratek to score from first and Poehlman to race all the way around to third.
JU scored again with two outs in the fourth inning when
Makenzie Buss singled to right center to plate
Kassidy Cross from second moments after Cross had stolen her third base of the season.
UNF had a chance to tie the game and perhaps take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, but the fifth-year senior Bilodeau was able to induce a groundout to end the inning and keep it 2-0 in favor of the Dolphins.
Those two runs would be all Bilodeau (13-7) needed for the second day in row, going the distance for the 17th time in 2021 and keeping the Ospreys off the scoreboard while allowing six hits and striking out four against one walk.
Buss, Bratek and Poehlman each went 1-3 in the game while Cross continued her season-long success against UNF, going 1-2 with a walk and a run scored while
Haley Holloway added a single of her own.
Jacksonville will play Thursday at 3 PM against the top seed out of the North Division Liberty, who wrapped up their best-of-three series with Lipscomb Saturday with a 7-0 win in game three in Lynchburg.
