Five Different Dolphins Score as JU Defeats Wofford in Home Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University men's soccer team (1-1-0) earned its first win of the regular season after five different Dolphins scored to contribute to the 5-1 victory over Wofford (0-1-0). This marks the first home-opening victory for the Dolphin since August of 2019.

Redshirt freshman Olivier Correa set the tone for the match after scoring a goal in the first twenty-three seconds of the game, to give JU a quick 1-0 lead. The Terriers attempted to respond with a goal in the next few minutes, but ultimately ended up being shut down by starting goalkeeper for the Dolphins, Matt Levy. At the 19 minute mark, Reed Davis would score his second goal of the season off an assist from Jose Manzo to extend the Dolphins lead to 2-0. Shortly after, Wofford made its way onto the board with a goal by Brandon Oddy, to cut JU's lead in half. Thirty-five seconds later, the Dolphins picked up momentum and Inti Antunez found the back of the net from a pass by Cole Reasonover to regain a two point lead.

However, the Dolphins were not done pressing the Terriers defense just yet. In the fortieth minute of the period, Mohamed Soumah scored his first goal for the Dolphins after receiving a pass from Alex Salvador. This goal extended JU's lead to 4-1 going into halftime.

In the second half, the Dolphins continued to dominate as Nick Mair made a solo shot to pull JU ahead, 5-1. This would also mark his first goal of the season and as a Dolphin. The remainder of the game grew silent as Wofford aimed to make it onto the board once more, but was unsuccessful. As the last whistle sounded, the Dolphins walked off the field in front of its home crowd with a victory for the first time since April.

" Thursday was not a great start to the regular season, but tonight we bounced back," redshirt junior Reed Davis said. "We have a lot of depth on our team, and everyone stepped up and played their part tonight."

The Dolphins will remain home for its next match on Saturday, Sept. 4. JU will compete against UNCW, with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. The evening will serve as Food Truck Night. Visit judolphins.com for the latest information on all things JU soccer.
