Buccaneers Score Last Second Shot to Hand Dolphins First Home Loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville's women's soccer team (5-2-1) suffered a tough loss after Charleston Southern (1-2-1) scored the game-winning goal in the last minute of play. The 2-1 loss would mark the first time the Dolphins have been defeated at Southern Oak Stadium this season.

The first ten minutes of the game favored the Buccaneers, as Charleston Southern managed to take back-to-back shot attempts in pursuit of gaining an early lead. At the 19 minute mark, the Dolphins began to pick up speed on offense. For the remainder of the period, the Dolphins rattled off five shot attempts and prevented the Buccaneers from attempting more. While the Dolphins strong offense constantly pressured the Buccaneers defense, JU was unable to make it onto the scoreboard before halftime.

After returning to the field, the Dolphins came out stronger than before. At the 49 minute mark, Lola Negrete took advantage of a penalty kick to put the Dolphins on the board first, 1-0. The next few minutes, the ball made its way across the entire field as each team put up a battle on offense. Eventually the Buccaneers responded with a goal of its own, as Emma Ryan found the back of the net at the 68 mark to tie the game, 1-1.

During the next 15 minutes of play, the Buccaneers locked in and took control. While each team managed to attempt two more shots before the final five minutes of the game, the Dolphins struggled to keep the ball on the Buccaneers half of the field. Just before the final whistle sounded, Charleston Southern's Jenea Knight managed to score on a breakaway to give the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead. With only 12 seconds left in the game, the Dolphins were unable to score and took its first loss at Southern Oak Stadium.

Up next, the Dolphins will hit the road to compete against the College of Charleston (1-6-1) on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kickoff against the Cougars is set for 12:00 p.m. ET.
