Dolphins Falter on Final Day of Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jacksonville University volleyball wrapped the Seahawk Invitational with a 1-2 weekend after dropping two matches on Saturday.

The Dolphins (3-9) were bested by UNCG in the morning and then Campbell in the afternoon, 3-0 in both.

UNCG

A strong start, with Kyndaal Stansberry picking up a pair of early kills after getting the start at OH, and an Isa Dostal solo block put the Dolphins up 5-1. UNCG came back to tie it at 10, and the teams traded ties and leads for the next six points, until a 4-0 JU run forced a UNCG timeout.

After the break, the Spartans found their footing, ripping off a 4-0 run of its own to take a 19-18 lead and then JU used a timeout. A 6-1 run in total for UNCG put them up 22-19, and despite kills by Autumn DeSantis and two by Stansberry after the timeout, the Dolphins dropped set one, 25-21.

Barbora Romancova got things started for JU in set two, scoring three of the Dolphins first four points. Trailing 7-4, JU called a timeout, but UNCG was able to keep the Dolphins at bay. Dostal and DeSantis tacked on kills to keep JU within striking distance.

The lead grew to seven, 21-14, for UNCG, and Brianna Jackson ended the run with a kill, before the Spartans again hit the accelerator, scoring the next three to force set point. A Dostal kill and Gyrani Rogers ace tried to draw the Dolphins close enough to strike, but UNCG closed it out to win 25-17.

JU used a 4-0 run to take an early 8-5 lead over UNCG and multiple Dolphins contributed to the early scoring, with DeSantis and Dostal registering kills and Camryn Honn adding an ace. UNCG came out of a timeout and went on a 5-0 run to take its first lead of the set. Stansberry and Romancova went back-to-back with kills and Kariana Ayala added an ace to put the Dolphin back up, 13-11.

UNCG responded with another run, rattling off six straight points to take a 17-13 and JU called timeout. The run extended to 9-0 and a 20-13 lead for the Spartans and the Dolphins had to use another timeout. UNCG closed out the set, 25-17, to win the match.

CAMPBELL

Stansberry had three early kills to help pace the Jacksonville offense, but Campbell used a 7-0 run to turn a 12-9 lead in to a 19-9 advantage. From there, Romancova and Dostal chipped in kills, but Campbell cruised to the set one victory, 25-15.
Campbell opened up the next set scoring seven of the first eight points. JU cut it to four, 12-8, on back-to-back kills from Dostal and DeSantis, but another run by Campbell, 4-0, helped build up the gap again and separated to take the second set, 25-14.

Campbell got off to another strong start, scoring seven straight points to start the set and led 10-1 before the Dolphins got the offense going. JU cut the deficit to five, 13-8 on an ace by Rebecca Rocassin, but the Camels built the lead back up to nine, 20-12, and held on to win the set, 25-18, and the match 3-0.

Jacksonville heads back on the road next weekend, opening up ASUN play in Nashville, Tenn., with a round-robin weekend against Lipscomb, Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky.
