Dolphins Defense Is Not Enough to Defeat FAU On The Road

Boca Raton, Fla. - Jacksonville's men's soccer team (2-6-0, 1-1-0 ASUN) took a tough 3-0 loss in Boca Raton against non-conference opponent, Florida Atlantic (6-1-1, 1-0-1 C-USA) on Tuesday night. The Dolphins held a strong defense through the first half to keep the score tied at 0, until the Owls offense took control during the second period to escape with the victory.

The first half was generally quiet, with each team having at least one opportunity to capture the lead.

In the first 10 minutes of play the Owls took three shot attempts, one of which would be saved by Dolphins starting goalkeeper, Jabari Gray. The Dolphins would be held to only one shot attempt, but managed to step up the pace on offense during the middle of the period. At the 11 minute mark JU rattled off three consecutive shots from Jake Duncan-Smith, Inti Antunez and Olivier Correa, but all were unable to find the back of the net.

Through the next 20 minutes, the Dolphins were able to reciprocate the Owls actions on defense and hold FAU to just one shot. Right before the end of the period, the Dolphins defense once again shined by preventing the Owls from scoring after FAU achieved back-to-back corner kicks. As the clock wound down, neither team was able to make it onto the board before exiting the field for halftime.

After a 15 minute break, FAU returned to the field a completely different team as the Owls intensified its offense. At the 52 minute mark, FAU's Ivan Mykhailenko snuck the ball past Gray to give the Owls the first lead of the game, 1-0. Six minutes later, the Owl added to its lead after Jose Alastuey chipped the ball into the goal. During the next fifteen minutes, the sturdy FAU offense remained intact, and the Owls achieved two more shot attempts.

Proving its offense could not be stopped, the Owl's Filip Jauk headed the ball over Gray to pull FAU ahead by three at the 72 minute mark. FAU's third goal would be the last shot taken during the game as the remaining 18 minutes were silent for both teams.

Up next, the Dolphins will take on ASUN opponent Stetson (2-4-2, 1-1-0 ASUN) in DeLand, Florida, on Saturday Oct. 2. Kickoff against the Hatters is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET.
