JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University volleyball started strong and put away UNCW in four sets to capture a weekend sweep of the Seahawks on Saturday.
The Dolphins (2-3) debuted at Swisher Gym this fall in style, backing up a five-set win Friday night with another quality performance to conclude the weekend.
SET ONE
Camryn Honn got the day started with an ace, a tone-setter for JU on the day. UNCW took an early lead, but the Dolphin size at the net contributed to a double-block by
Isa Dostal and
Autumn DeSantis helped bring JU back within one, 8-7.
Cami Kelsay then started to heat up, registering a kill to spark a 5-0 run to put JU on top for good. She had three total during that run, sparking a UNCW timeout. She had another after the break, and Dostal and
Brianna Jackson chipped in with kills of their own to push the lead to 20-15. Kelsay then scored the last three points of the set for the Dolphins, to close out an opening set win, 25-22.
SET TWO
The score was tied seven times in the first 20 points scored in the set as the teams traded blows early. DeSantis, Dostal and Kelsay all had kills early, but JU trailed 13-10 before calling timeout. Dostal answered after the break with a quick kill, followed by two DeSantis kills and another by Kelsay to tie it up at 14. JU then fell behind again, 18-16 and 23-21 before a service error gave the Dolphins the opening they needed. Another error by the Seahawks, this time on the attack, followed by back-to-back aces from
Niccola Bozzini secured the set two victory, 25-23.
SET THREE
UNCW got off to a hot start in the third set, leading 4-1 and 9-3 before JU settled in. The Dolphins scored four of the next five, with two kills by Dostal and an ace from Bozzini. UNCW then found separation again, rattling off seven of the next eight points to lead 16-7.
JU battled, getting kills from Kelsay,
Barbora Romancova and DeSantis to keep themselves within striking distance, but never got closer than three down the stretch, falling 25-20.
SET FOUR
After dropping the first two points of the fourth set, JU got rolling, and led 11-4 after a Seahawk attack error. The lead kept growing, as
Camryn Honn dished out an ace, Jackson mixed in a few kills and DeSantis had a big block.
Trailing by as many as 10 in the set, UNCW tried for a late rally, but JU kept the pedal to the floor, finishing it off with yet another Kelsay kill to claim the match victory.
The freshman Kelsay had another big day, with a game-high 19 kills. Honn assisted 42 times and
Kariana Ayala led the way with 11 digs. Romancova had 10.5 points, with six kills and two blocks and Bozzini had three aces.
Jacksonville heads back on the road on Tuesday, traveling down to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Florida Atlantic. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
