JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Dolphins (7-5) returned home after the New Year and a battle with COVID protocols to match up against conference rival FGCU (13-1) for the first time this season. JU would drop the contest 64-83.
The first ten minutes were close, as both teams went up and down the court scoring consistently and confidently, finishing the quarter 18-22, FGCU. Once again, the points came in different ways, FGCU scored 12 of 22 points from the three-point line while JU remained in the paint or at the line for theirs. The next ten minutes would remain the same as FGCU led 29-43 at the half.
This game got away from the Dolphins in the second half. As the game went on, they missed two of their top starters in Asiah Jones and Carmella Walker even more. The two are stout defenders who hold over 25 minutes per game in playing time. Without the two, JU lost in two key categories: rebounds and turnovers. This would cost them the game early in the third quarter and FGCU never looked back.
JU will look to bounce back on Wednesday, January 12th as they welcome Stetson (8-7) to Swisher Gymnasium for a 7PM conference matchup.
