JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University men's basketball used a crushing second-half defensive effort to pull away from Johnson, winning 85-34 at Swisher Gym on Friday afternoon.
The Dolphins (1-1) outscored Johnson 48-10 in the second half to extend its home winning streak to 16 straight victories.
Jacksonville jumped out to an early lead, with
Jordan Davis drilling a three on a feed from
Kevion Nolan and
Mike Marsh scoring four straight points. The lead grew to as many as nine, 20-11, on a
Gyasi Powell three-pointer with 11:41 left. It was a four-point game with 10 minutes to play in the first half, with Johnson taking advantage of turnovers to score in transition and on offensive putbacks.
JU maintained a 37-24 lead at the break, but came out and put the game away early in the second half with a stifling defensive effort. Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, JU outscored Johnson 30-4. The team finished the day shooting 56.5 percent from the field, bolstered by 58.8 percent shooting in the second half, while the Suns managed just 12.1 percent shooting from the floor in the second half and went just 1-16 from three-point range.
