Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Scott Manze

Dolphins Put Clamps on Campbell for Big Road Win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jacksonville University men's basketball used a 15-3 run to end the first half and a stifling defensive effort to pick up a 64-43 road win over Campbell at Gore Arena on Wednesday.

The Dolphins (3-1) were led by Kevion Nolan's 20-point effort and Jordan Davis's first career double-double to earn its first road win of the season.

The game started off as a defensive slugfest both ways, with JU holding Campbell to just 30 percent shooting throughout the first half, but struggling with turnovers itself, giving it away 11 times in the first half, which led to nine points off of turnovers for the Camels.

With three minutes left in the first half, JU came out of the media timeout leading 17-15. Jarius Cook attacked a closeout in the right corner and after drawing the defense, dished to Mike Marsh for a dunk. After a missed front-end free throw by Campbell, the Camels tried a zone defense against JU. It lasted just one possession, with Nolan tossing an alley-oop to Osayi Osifo. Nolan then drove down the lane and converted a layup and was fouled, with a three-point play. Davis grabbed a steal moments later and dunked in transition, forcing a Campbell timeout.

The Camels then committed a shot clock violation out of the stoppage and Nolan buried back-to-back threes, before a halfcourt shot banked in at the buzzer for Campbell, sending JU into the half with a 32-18 lead.

The start of the second half went right back to being low-scoring, with the teams combing for eight points each the first eight minutes of the half. Nolan hit his third three-pointer of the night, another shot clock violation by Campbell led to a Marsh hook shot and Omar Payne hit one of two free throws to push the lead to 20, 48-28, with 7:23 to play.

After the lead grew to 21 on a layup by Dylan O'Hearn with 2:30 remaining, but Campbell tried to mount a rally, using a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 15 with 1:47 left. JU strung together a couple of stops and eventually salted the game away at the free throw line, going 4-4 in the final minute.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"He's not always the biggest guy on the floor, but at times he looks like he is the most athletic. As far as picking up full-court, hitting timely shots and controlling the glass, he is doing an unbelievable job."

- Head Coach Jordan Mincy on graduate guard Jordan Davis after his 10-point, 13-rebound double-double in the win at Campbell

NUMBERS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Jacksonville outrebounded Campbell 43-17. The plus-26 rebounding margin was the best single-game margin in the Jordan Mincy era and the highest margin since at least 2010-11
  • Kevion Nolan registered his 35th career double-figure scoring game and 10th career 20-point game
  • Jordan Davis grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds as part of his first career double-double. It was the first 13 rebound game for a Dolphin since Osayi Osifo at North Florida on Jan. 15, 2022
  • Dylan O'Hearn recorded his first career double-figure game in a Dolphin uniform with 10 points, and his 24th overall
  • It was the second time this season, and 22nd time under Mincy that JU has held an opponent under 60 points in a game. The Dolphins are 21-1 in such contests the last two years
