JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Dolphins (13-9) hosted the Flames from Liberty University (23-2) in their second of two matchups this season. A tough night of shooting for JU combined with great post play from Liberty saw the Dolphins lose by a score of 45-61.
The Dolphins continued a theme of slow starts this season falling to an 11-2 deficit just five minutes into the first quarter. Finding some shooting success towards the end of the quarter,
DeShari Graham hit a big three with 28 seconds remaining cutting the Flames' lead to five.
Attempting to slow play down in the second quarter the Dolphins enjoyed more possession of the ball but were not able to capitalize, shooting just 3-10 from the field. Great defensive play on the other end including two blocks from
KayKay Hayes kept the game close, and with 6:03 remaining in the half a basket from Hayes cut the lead to one. This would be the closest JU would come to leading the game as Liberty found their rhythm and stretched their lead back to ten before halftime.
The shooting woes would continue for the Dolphins for the entire second half as they went 4-14 (28.6%) from the field in the third quarter. As they struggled, Liberty found success getting the ball down low to center Mya Berkman who had a solid performance all around recording 13 points and seven rebounds.
The fourth quarter was much of the same for the Dolphins as they shot 18.8% from the field compared to Liberty's 45.5%. The lead would never be less than ten as Liberty cruised to the finish line winning the game 61-45.
Asiah Jones performed well in the loss recording a solid stat line of 13 points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Taylor Hawks also battled hard for the Dolphins recording ten points and four assists.
The Dolphins will travel to Kennesaw, GA for their next game on Monday, February 14 where they will take on Kennesaw State (8-13) at 5:30 pm. This will be the first of two matchups between the teams this season.
