KENNESAW, Ga. – The Dolphins (14-9) took their next ASUN battle to Kennesaw State to take on the Owls (9-14) in their first of two matchups of the week. In a come from behind victory, JU would beat KSU 56-51.
A game rescheduled for Valentine's Day of 2022 saw a contest that the opposing Owls, in pink, would come up heartbroken in the final minutes.
The Dolphins began the game scoring the first basket, then shortly after found themselves struggling to make many more. Once leading 4-2 in the first minute of the game, finishing the first quarter down 8-16. At half, trailing by fifteen. Coach Darnell Haney spoke simply on the ESPN+ broadcast, "we have to hit layups." A point of emphasis the team would have to take on to compete in the second half.
The script would flip completely, once again defining the Dolphins' "#RELENTLESS" motto, JU would go on to score sixteen points in the third quarter. Taylor Hawks and Makayla Edwards led the way with five apiece, with Jalisa Dunlap contributing four of her own. On the defensive end, they held KSU to just nine points, cutting their lead to 36-44.
The momentum continued to swing for the Dolphins in the fourth, scoring twenty points on 54.5% shooting. Another quarter led by Taylor Hawks was accompanied by KayKay Hayes, "the engine that got us revved up...," an ecstatic Coach Haney stated following the game. That engine would fuel a comeback story fit for a day of love and, in some team's cases... heartbreak. JU would hold the Owls to just seven points on 16.7% shooting to come out on top to begin their busy week.
A week that includes their next matchup on Thursday, February 17th in DeLand, Florida visiting Stetson. Following Stetson, they come back home to host KSU on Saturday. "Extremely proud of our group for grinding it out and taking ownership. It takes a lot out of you playing multiple games in a week, but we're built for it." Coach Haney confidently stated after their comeback win.
