BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Dolphins capped off a five-game tournament with a split doubleheader, winning their first one against Columbia (1-3) by eight runs and dropping the final contest to Michigan State (6-5), both in six innings.
In their first game of the day, JU's bats would explode for a season-high twelve runs against Columbia. They got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the first inning of play, scoring off a single, error, and sacrifice fly. The next inning would be no different, as Holzrichter would drive in two and Logan would drive in a run of her own to give JU their largest lead of the year of 7-0.
With a hot start offensively came another solid outing from Skylar Whitty. Whitty would pitch a complete game while surrendering four runs on seven hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. She would be the only pitcher in the game with a strikeout as the Dolphins refused to go down without putting the ball in play. Due to their ability to put the ball in play and control the game defensively, they came out victorious 12-4.
The second game of the day was a different story for the Dolphins. Playing their second matchup with MSU of the season, the Dolphins played a tough contest. With Shelby Harpe on the mound, MSU would score one in the second and another in the fourth to slowly build a 0-2 lead. After a triple from Allison Bratek in the sixth, the Dolphins cut the lead to 1-2.
Unfortunately for JU, the bottom half of that inning would be all the game would offer as MSU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to ensure victory for the Spartans, 1-9. The Dolphins would finish the FAU Strikeout Cancer tournament with two wins and three losses as well as many improvements on both sides of the field.
They come back home to face Georgia Southern on Thursday, March 3rd, at 6PM at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
