JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball dropped a midweek contest to Georgia Southern 12-7 on Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium.
The Dolphins (6-2) suffered just the second setback of the season in a back-and-forth tilt.
Georgia Southern wouldn't take long to get on the scoreboard in the top of first inning with a two-run home run to take the early lead.
Blake DeLamiellure responded by launching his first home run of the season to cut the Georgia Southern lead to 2-1 in the second. He came back up in the bottom of fourth and hit yet another home run to tie the game at two and freshman
Ethan Campbell hit his first collegiate home run to give the Dolphins a 3-2 lead later that inning.
Michael Darrell-Hicks went four innings in the start, surrendering the two early runs and struck out five Eagles.
Richard Long came in to relieve Darrell-Hicks, throwing two innings and giving up two runs.
In the top of the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly tied the game at three, then an RBI double by Georgia Southern gave the Eagles the lead, 4-3, and they did not look back.
After GSU pushed across six runs in the top of the seventh, Jacksonville tried to crawl their way back into the game in the bottom half.
Clayton Hodges walked with one-out, followed by back-to-back singles by
Chase Malloy and
Jesus Pacheco to load the bases.
Raymond Gil then came to the plate looking to put a dent into the score and did so successfully with a grand slam, Gil's first home run of the season to make it 10-7.
However, it was not enough, as Georgia Southern got the final six outs of the game to win by a score of 13-7. A couple of insurance runs were added by the Eagles in the top of the ninth inning and a three-up, three-down ninth inning was the finishing touch on the Georgia Southern win.
