Dolphins Persevere in Extras at FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A three-run 12th inning propelled Jacksonville University baseball to an extra inning win over FAMU on Tuesday night at Moore-Kittles Field.

The Dolphins (13-10) got a pinch-hit RBI single from Josh Steidl to break the deadlock and Luke Baker pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first career win.

FAMU got the scoring started in the third, when they strung together consecutive bunt singles and took advantage of a wild pitch to strike first. JU quickly answered with a two-out rally of its own. Ethan Campbell was hit by a pitch, TJ Curd singled and Trace Burchard snuck an RBI single to right to tie it at one.

FAMU scored again in the fourth to retake the lead, capitalizing on Dolphins errors and miscues. JU immediately responded again to tie it at two in the fifth. Jesus Pacheco singled with one out and scored one batter later on Christian Coipel's double to right center.

In the sixth, Jacksonville took its first lead. Curd drew a leadoff walk and Burchard followed with a single. Jonah Diaz drew a one-out walk to load the bases and with two-outs, Coipel was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Elias Flowers came off the bench and delivered a pinch-hit two RBI single to right to make it 5-2 Dolphins.

JU tacked on one more in the seventh, when Campbell walked to leadoff the inning, took second on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the FAMU shortstop to push it to 6-2.

The Rattlers rallied, starting in the bottom of the seventh. They scored three runs on a two-RBI double and error to cut the lead to one, 6-5.

After stranding the tying run at third in the eighth, the first two men reached for FAMU in the ninth. After a bunt attempt where Tyler Vogel tried to get the lead runner at third, everyone was safe. A 10-pitch at-bat ended in a walk to tie the game at six before Vogel got a strikeout to end the inning and force extras.

After both teams threatened in extras, it was JU that broke through in the 12th. Pacheco drew a walk to start the frame and went to second on a wild pitch. Coipel hit an opposite-field single and Steidl stepped in with one-out and ripped a single to right to give the Dolphins the lead for good. Alex Imposimato followed with an RBI infield single and Burchard drove in his second of the day to make it 9-6. Baker struck out two as part of a 1-2-3 bottom half to close it out.
