JU Falls in ASUN Championship FInal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jacksonville University men's basketball fell to Bellarmine in the ASUN Men's Basketball Championship Final 77-72, on Tuesday night in Freedom Hall.

The Dolphins (21-10) came up just short in a quest for its first ASUN Championship.

JU got off to a strong start, scoring the first four points of the game on Osayi Osifo layups. Bellarmine came back and rattled off nine straight points to take a lead it would not relinquish.

JU cut it to three on another Osifo layup with 14:09 to play in the first, but a 16-2 run by the Knights extended the lead to 18, the largest of the game, 28-10. The Dolphins battled back, with Mike Marsh scoring six straight as part of a 12-0 run to cut it to six, 28-22, with 4:22 to play in the opening half. Bellarmine quickly pushed it to double-figures again, but Marsh got a putback at the end of the half to make it 36-26 at the break.

The lead ebbed and flowed from eight to 12 points throughout the early part of the second half. Gyasi Powell hit a three-pointer and a loose ball foul was called and JU got the ball right back, leading to a Jordan Davis pull-up to make it a six-point game again with 12:13 left.

The two teams traded buckets until Bellarmine hit consecutive threes again to take a double-digit point lead again. The Dolphins still had another push in them, getting it to six multiple times under two minutes to play, but Bellarmine were consistent at the free throw line to salt the game away.
