JU Drops Opener to Stetson on Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla - Jacksonville University baseball dropped game one of a three game series against Stetson on Thursday afternoon by a score of 6-3.

For the Dolphins (16-15, 4-9), Mason Adams suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) after going 7.1 innings and registering ten strikeouts. Tyler Vogel came into the game throwing the final 1.2 innings and getting one Hatter batter to strikeout.

The Hatters started the game with a base hit then a ground out on a fielder's choice (4-6) had a runner on first with one out. The runner proceeded to steal second base, then a ground ball to the right side got the runner to third. A base hit to right field scored the run and gave Stetson an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Christian Coipel led off and on a 2-0 count, drove one to the opposite field over the left field wall for a solo shot, his eighth home run on the season, to tie the ball game 1-1. Blake DeLamielleure got a single to left field that was followed by a Jonah Diaz flare just over the second baseman's head to put runners at the corners with one out. Jackson Grabsky was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cam Ridley, on a 0-2 count, was also hit by a pitch to pick up an RBI and give the Dolphins the lead, 2-1. However, the Hatters did a good job getting out of the jam with a pop out to the first baseman in foul territory then a strikeout to strand the bases loaded.

Stetson bounced back in the top of the fourth with a two-out solo blast over the centerfield wall to tie the game, 2-2.

After sharing scoreless frames over the next three innings, the Dolphins in the bottom of the seventh inning got the offense moving as Grabsky walked and a Ridley base hit on a hit-and-run put runners on the corners with nobody out. That forced the Hatters to make a call to the bullpen. The Dolphins brought up the top of the order. Chase Malloy hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored the run, giving the Dolphins a 3-2 lead.

Stetson did not go away quietly, though, as in the top of the eighth inning, a lead off base hit got the tying run aboard. After a groundout to the pitcher on a fielder's choice (1-6), a base hit back up the middle put the go-ahead run aboard. That would be it for Adams as Coach Chris Hayes called for closer Tyler Vogel. After a strike out, the Stetson runners advanced 90 feet on a double steal, then a wild pitch by Vogel allowed the road team to tie the game, 3-3. The next batter delivered for Stetson with an RBI base hit up the middle to gain a 4-3 lead.

Stetson added to their lead in the ninth as they got the a runner aboard via an error, which allowed the runner to advance to second. The next batter reached on a base on balls. A wild pitch advanced the lead runner to third base. The trailing runner at first stole second without a throw, then a base hit right back up the middle drove them both in to extend Stetson's lead to 6-3.

The Dolphins got a runner aboard on the ninth on a Ridley infield single and he stole second base with two outs and came in to score on a Jake Berg base hit to left field to cut the lead to two, but a ground out on a fielder's choice ended the ball game.
