Women’s Lacrosse Runs Away with Round One Victory Over Stanford Despite Lengthy Delay

GAINESVILLE, FLA. – Jacksonville Women's Lacrosse advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history on Friday night following their lopsided 20-8 victory over the Stanford Cardinal.

Following an explosive first half which saw the Dolphins jump out to a commanding 11-3 lead, the game was halted for just over two hours due to lightning in the Gainesville area. While the weather caused a break in the game it was the Dolphin offense who truly provided the lightning and thunder with Sarah Elms leading the way recording a five-goal half.

Upon the restart of the game with 13:12 to go in the third quarter, the 'Phins picked up right where they left off scoring three goals within a minute of each other to stretch the lead back to 10 (14-4). They would then add three more goals while allowing one, finishing up the quarter with a 17 to 5 lead.

The fourth quarter would be more evenly matched as the Dolphins began to take their foot of the gas some. The two teams would end up trading three goals apiece in the quarter ending the game at a score line of 20-8.

The 12 goal victory marks Jacksonville's second largest margin of victory in an NCAA Tournament game ever and also their third tournament win in program history. The win also marks Jacksonville's first program victory over Stanford and former Dolphin Assistant Coach Brittney Orashen.

On offense the Dolphins received goals from 10 different players including six with multi-goal games, Sarah Elms lead the way with eight points (5G-3A), a ground ball, and a caused turnover.

Defensively, the Dolphins were able to shut down the nation's leading assister in Ashley Humphrey by causing 13 turnovers in the match. Midfielder Megan Prescott led the caused turnover category with three while also adding one goal, one assist, three draw controls and a single ground ball.

Redshirt Freshman standout Paige Pagano continued her reign in net as she collected the win while making five saves on the day.
