Men’s Rowing Completes Day Two at Dad Vail Regatta, Wins Varsity Eight Second Final

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Jacksonville Men's Rowing finished up the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday evening, claiming first place in the Varsity Heavyweight Eight Second Final.

Beginning the day with the Varsity Heavyweight 8 Semifinal race, the Jacksonville 1V missed out on the Grand Final by just under four seconds to the boat from St. Joseph's who posted a third-place time of 05:41.067. The Dolphin time of 05:45.313 did however advance them to the Second Final which they ended up winning later in the event.

The next event of the day saw the 'Phins claim another bottom half finish, this time being the Men's Pair Race in which the Dolphin duo of Bobby Radloff and Abel Monroy posted a fifth-place time of 08:05.219.

The Dolphin 3V8 then followed the Pair Race up with their own fifth place finish, posting a time of 06:25.027 which was a great deal slower than the other four boats in competition.

Although they did make it to the Grand Final, the Dolphin 2V then followed the 3V up with another last place finish, this time coming in the JV 8 grand final with a time of 06:03.069.

Finally, the 'Phins closed the day out on a high note claiming the victory in the Varsity Heavyweight 8 Second Final posting an impressive time of 05:43.334. With the quick time, the 1V was able to edge out boats from top programs in Marietta, Rutgers, Minnesota, Stetson, and West Point.

When asked his thoughts on the regatta as a whole and his team's victory in the Varsity 8 Second Final, Head Coach Preston Weinard was happy with his team's resilience against some high level opponents and ability to finish on a high note.

"It was a mixed bag today but it was great to watch the Varsity 8 keep their bow in front in their last race and the last race for JU. The 2V and 3V made improvements from their earlier races but were up against some tough competitors in their finals. The pair made a huge improvement in their rowing and came off the water proud of their performance. Overall, our team represented JU extremely well; tenacious racing and good sportsmanship all around. Our team is taking swings at fast programs, and it has taken years to get JU to this point. Always moving forward and making progress! GBTW!"
