JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The rowing season continues into the heart of Spring with another in-state cup rivalry for the Jacksonville Dolphins. Jacksonville will head south to Fellesmere, Florida to face off against Florida Tech for the Bill Jurgens Cup.
"JU and Florida Tech go way back, and it's been quite the rivalry over the decades," head coach
Preston Weinard said. "We are honored to start a new cup between JU and Florida Tech's varsity eights, and name it after Bill Jurgens."
Jurgens is a Jacksonville alumnus and Hall of Famer who went on to coach at and serve as Athletics Director at Florida Tech. Now, a new Florida rivalry trophy between the two schools will bear his name.
"He is a "coaches coach", and I'm honored to call him a friend," Weinard said.
The Dolphins will race two eights and a pair Saturday morning against the Panthers. Jacksonville has won three rivalry cups this season, taking the U.T. Bradley Cup over Rollins, the Green Cup over Stetson and the Ro-Wing Trophy over Embry-Riddle.
The racing starts at 9 AM with the first varsity eight in the cup race. The second varsity eight and a varsity pair will race at 9:15 and 9:30 respectively.
Head Coach Preston Weinard
"It's Rivalry Week! JU and Florida Tech go way back, and it's been quite the rivalry over the decades. We are honored to start a new cup between JU and Florida Tech's varsity eights, and name it after Bill Jurgens. He's an alumni, Hall of Famer, and absolute legend at JU. He started coaching at Florida Tech in the 70s and brought their program to dominance for decades.Â
He also served as Florida Tech's athletic director until 2020 and still is in an emeritus role to this day. He is a "coaches coach", and I'm honored to call him a friend. Lots of emotions heading into this week, but our crews have confidence, poise, and pursuit of getting better every day. We made some strides over spring break, and are excited to race for another cup! GBTW!
