Men’s Rowing Prepares to Wrap Season With One Boat in the 2022 IRA National Championship

WEST WINDSOR, NJ. – Jacksonville Men's Rowing gets ready to close out their spring season this weekend when they take part in the three-day long 2022 IRA National Championship from Friday, June 3, to Sunday, June 5.

JU qualified for and will compete in a single event over the weekend with the Dolphin Varsity Four hitting the waters of Mercer Lake beginning with the Men's Varsity Four+ time trials at 11:20 am on Friday morning. They will be competing alongside 26 other V4 boats including top level programs such as California, Penn, Syracuse, Northeastern, and Navy.

Looking at JU's performance historically when competing a Varsity 4 at the IRA National Championship, the Dolphins highest achieved finish was 13th overall back in 2013, and their most recent finish was in 2019 when the 'Phins claimed a similar 14th place.

One member of that 13th place Varsity Four from 2013, now Head Coach Preston Weinard, was very hopeful in his team's ability to better the result that his V4 boat recorded just nine years ago. When asked about his thoughts on the upcoming weekend, Weinard was excited to see his V4 lay down some good racing at the nation's most prestigious event.

"The IRA is the pinnacle of college racing in the U.S. and the level of competition is very high. Many of the Varsity 4+ entries at the IRA this year are the only boat representing their respective institution. This makes the stakes very high! I'm very proud of this IRA squad and the work they have put in to prepare for some high-octane racing. I'm very excited to watch them come down the line and represent JU at the final dance of 2022," said Coach Weinard.

Following a season of ups and downs that was highlighted by a win in the JV8+ event at this year's SIRA Regatta, and a victory in the Varsity Eight B-Final at the Dad-Vail Regatta back in early May, this weekend will officially mark Jacksonville Men's Rowing's last event, and the institution's last athletic event of the year.
