Volleyball Falls To North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Jacksonville volleyball team fell to the North Florida in three sets on Wednesday night.

Set One:

The River City Rumble started with the Ospreys taking three of the first four points, and shortly thereafter, they took a 4-2 lead. After a service error by UNF, Anna Erickson and Alija Heins combined for five consecutive JU points, giving the Dolphins an 8-4 lead. The Ospreys began to rally, thanks in part to service errors by JU, and the set suddenly became a one-point game at 13-12.

Out of a media timeout, which Jacksonville saw a 14-12 lead at, the Dolphins immediately used a kill from Heins and an ace from Jenna McNamera to regain the momentum and force an Ospreys timeout. The Dolphins began to run with their momentum, reaching a 20-15 lead, their largest of the set. However, UNF rallied right back with three quick points, two from Kailey McKnight, and the set was at 20-18 when JU took a timeout. Out of the break, Jacksonville took two of three points after kills from Anna Erickson and Lyric Love. For the second time in the first set, UNF took a timeout to try and regroup for the final stretch after the deficit reached four at 23-19.

Fresh out of the timeout, JU's McNamera recorded a kill. The Ospreys would go on to score five of the next six, and suddenly, the set was tied at 24-24. With the newfound momentum, UNF rallied to score five consecutive points and close the first set 26-24. Four of the five points were kills by Mahalia White.

Set Two:

The Ospreys used the same momentum from the end of the first set into the second as they jumped to a 6-1 lead early. Jacksonville used a service error, four straight kills from Erickson, and two service aces from Rebecca Rocassin to rally to a one-point deficit at 9-8, thus forcing a UNF timeout. Jacksonville scored twice consecutively after the timeout for a 10-9 lead, their first of the set. The Ospreys responded with points in nine of eleven services for an 18-12 lead. The UNF rally was enough to force a JU timeout.

Two quick points from UNF out of the timeout were answered by a McNamra kill, bringing the score to 20-13. But the Ospreys' momentum continued to be tough to overcome. The two sides traded points, and a small rally from Jacksonville, led by a pair of kills from Heins, saw the Dolphins get within six on two separate occasions. However, the damage had been done by the Ospreys, as they clinched the second set 25-17.

Set Three:

Both sides opened the third set trading points left and right. However, it was the Dolphins who garnered enough steam to separate on the scoresheet first. A trio of attack errors by UNF and kills from McFall, McNamara, and Young saw JU take an 8-4 lead. The early momentum from the Dolphins was matched by the Ospreys as they scored seven consecutive points to take a 12-9 lead, forcing a JU timeout.

Again, the Dolphins and Ospreys began to trade points, and a short rally led by McNamara and Heins had JU down two, 14-12. After a pair of points from UNF, the Dolphins and Ospreys scored one each for the next eight points, with UNF leading 20-16. Once the Ospreys scored another point to stretch their lead to 21-16, JU took a timeout to regroup. The two sides scored twice each, and JU took another timeout. A service ace from McKnight was answered by UNF, and the score showed 24-20 when UNF took a timeout. The timeout proved effective as the Ospreys took home the next point and the victory in all three sets.
