Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Matthew Shimko

Dolphins Come Up Short Against Marshall

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite four Dolphins in double figures Jacksonville University women's basketball team (4-6) fall to Marshall University (5-4).

Edyn Battle dropped 26 points, shooting 50%, also adding a couple of threes. Center Jada Duckett lead the team in rebounds, with 5 out of 8 of her rebounds on the offensive glass. She also added two steals and two blocks in her performance.

Dolphins make another mark in history as they tipped-off to battle Marshall University for the first time in school history. Marshall began the game with an intense run-and-jump press that at first caused some chaos in the backcourt for the Dolphins. The Herd jumped on the board first to take an early lead. However, from applying too much backcourt pressure, JU was able to find a wide-open Jada Duckett to convert her first bucket of the year and make a 5-6 lead for The Herd. Once Edyn Battle found her groove, she penetrated down a congested lane to draw an and-one layup. Relentlessly Battle saw the rim again, this time, a follow-up by Duckett to see the count 7-6, and the first Dolphin lead with 5:28 on the clock. JU would end up taking a late first quarter lead 9-6 before Marshall converted an and-one to tie the game 9-9 with 3:21. A tradeoff of three's and two's, and more and-ones for Battle left a score 25-20 Dolphins.

Marshall opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run that saw them up seven with 4:43 remaining. A continuation of Marshall press kept the heat on the Dolphins as they gradually ate away the seven-point disadvantage to three 37-34 with 50 seconds left. Before the Half Marshall put up a dagger three and JU's Dunlap responded with two to end the half with 40-36 Marshall lead.

The Dolphins came out of the half scorching hot with consecutive buckets by Zaria Blake, Dunlap, and Sana'a Garrett. The Dolphins eventually took back the game 43-40 with 8:35 outstanding. Dunlap increased the Dolphin lead to 47-44 until the Marshall press provided a change of events, re-writing the score 50-47 in favor of The Herd. The back half of the third was competitive on both ends, Marshall went up as much as 12 in the quarter but scoring for Battle opened as she went for 11 points in the third to keep JU in the game. By the horn the score read 73-67 for Marshall.

The Dolphins managed to regain striking distance in the beginning of the fourth bit as the game progressed the Herd convincingly pulled away finishing the game with a final score of 102-77.
