Dolphins Fall at #20 Florida State

Tallahassee, Fla. - Jacksonville women's basketball team (3-5) took a tough loss against ACC contender Florida State (7-2) 99-73 Thursday in Donald L. Tucker Center.

Edyn Battle led all scorers with 26 points, showcasing an efficient 50 percent shooting accuracy from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line. Freshman Saniyah Craig, returning from injury, nearly matched her season high with 15 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Julene Royale contributed eight points to the Dolphins' final tally.

Today signified how this sport is just a game of runs. A lot of punches thrown early by Florida State saw Jacksonville University at a quick disadvantage of 19-3 more than halfway through the first. Dolphins were putting up an ample number of shots, but just couldn't see enough fall to weather the early surge by FSU. As the quarter advanced, Battle and Bre'Yanna Frazier managed to get a few buckets to go as the quarter came to an end with a 26-10 lead for Florida State.

Dolphins struck first to open the second with a 3-0 run that minimized the Seminole advantage to 12. FSU responded with an 9-0 run, broken only by a long jumper by sophomore Royale with 6:25 outstanding. By the buzzer, the green and white finished the half competing well. JU and FSU equally scored 15 additional points and Dolphins guard Battle led all scorers with 12.

Jalisa Dunlap kick-started the third quarter with a three-pointer, igniting a 7-4 run in favor of JU that brought game within 15 as 7:41 remained. The Dolphins started to settle in, with Isamery Telleria, Jada Jones, Craig, Battle, and Royale all successfully delivering on the offensive end. Despite balanced scoring in the third quarter (24-23), back and forth baskets proved too much for the Dolphins, as they needed defensive stops to regain striking distance. The scoreboard read 72-52 with another 10 minutes to play.

Led by Battle and Craig, JU climbed back within 15, trailing 73-88 with 3:26 left in the fourth. However, over the next three minutes, the Seminoles sealed the game with an 11-0 run, ultimately putting the Dolphins away.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"Proud of our efforts today," said Head Coach Special Jennings. "There are small victories, even in defeat. We had less than 17 turnovers, got on the glass, and scored 73 points. We are headed in the right direction."
