Bats Explode for Midweek Sweep of Dartmouth

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball completed a midweek sweep of Dartmouth on Wednesday night, winning 15-4 in seven-inning run-rule.

The Dolphins (15-8) registered season-highs in hits and runs, piling up 17 base knocks en route to the 15 runs scored.

In the top of the first, the Big Green got a two-out base runner on an error. A double ripped down the left field line scored the runner all the way from first to give Dartmouth an early 1-0 lead.

Jacksonville was quick to respond as Chase Malloy hit the first pitch he saw into left field for a base hit. He then stole second to give Elias Flowers a runner into scoring position. A ground ball to first base moved Malloy to third with one away as Kris Armstrong stepped in to the batter's box. Armstrong did his job with a sacrifice fly into shallow left field that tied the game, 1-1.

After Scout Updike struck out the side in order in the top of the second, the Dolphins grabbed the bats again in bottom half. Blake DeLamielleure smoked a ball into left field for a base hit to give Jacksonville another leadoff base hit. Following a fly out to center field for the first out of the inning, Jonny Barditch reached on a bunt for a base hit to put runners at first and second for Blake Edmonds. Edmonds took advantage of the opportunity with an RBI single back up the middle to give Jacksonville a 2-1 lead. The Big Green settled down and stranded the two runners.

Dartmouth responded and led off the top of the third with a walk. On a pitch that was over the head of the batter, but hit his bat and rolled fair, a throwing error put runners at second and third to start the inning. A sacrifice fly into center field tied the game back up at 2-2. A ground out to shortstop (6-3) moved the runner to third with two away. Updike got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Armstrong was quick to break the tie as he blasted his ninth homerun of the season to give Jacksonville a 3-2 lead. Back-to-back two-out walks forced the Big Green to make a pitching change. A third consecutive walk loaded the bases for the nine-hole hitter, Edmonds. He drew yet another walk to bring home a run making it 4-2. A swinging bunt by Chase Malloy placed perfectly down the third base line brought in another run to make it 5-2. Then another RBI infield hit by Flowers extended the lead to 6-2.

In the top of the fifth, a two-out base hit gave Dartmouth a base runner. On a wild pitch, the runner took second base but was left stranded as Updike continued to deal.

Barditch led off the bottom of the fifth with a base on balls. Edmonds kept his hot bat going with his second hit of the night to put two-on for the top of the order. On a balk call, the runners move up 90 feet to second and third for Malloy. He drew a walk to load the bases. Flowers stepped in and delivered with a two RBI single up the middle to make it 8-2. The Dolphins kept it going with an Armstrong single to load the bases full. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Hogan McIntosh made it 9-2 as all the runners advanced up 90 feet. With runners at second and third, Justin Nadeau hit another deep fly ball to right field to score yet another run to extend the Jacksonville lead to 10-2. DeLamielleure wasn't going to miss out on the action as he hit an RBI double kept the onslaught going. Josh Steidl traded places with Delamielleure as he drove in a run on a RBI double to make it 12-2 after five.

In the bottom of the sixth, Edmonds picked up his third hit of the night to lead off the frame. After a strikeout out, Luke Blas pinch hit for Flowers and drew a walk to put two on for Armstrong. He blasted his second home run of the game to make it 15-2 as he added three more RBIs.

Heston Mosley took over in the seventh inning which was the last of the ball game. The Big Green made some noise in the bottom of the seventh. Dartmouth loaded the bases with two away. A two RBI double off the left field wall made it 15-4. However, that was all the Big Green could get as a ground ball ended the game on a 10-run rule.
