KENNESAW, Ga. – Jacksonville University baseball fell behind early and dropped game two of its weekend series at Kennesaw State, 13-3, in seven innings on Saturday.
The Dolphins (25-17, 10-10) left nine men on-base, while the Owls capitalized on 11 free passes issued in the game.
KSU struck first for the second straight day, plating three in the first. After JU put two-on with two-out, but failed to strike in the top half of the frame, the Owls put the first two runners on thanks to a wild pitch strikeout and a hit batsman. A three-run homer to center made it 3-0 before an out was officially recorded, but they were held to only that in the first.
The Owls tacked on two more in the second. A leadoff solo home run to left was followed by a walk, bunt single and sacrifice to move both runners into scoring position. After another walk loaded the bases with one-out, an RBI groundout pushed the lead to 5-0 after two.
Blake DeLamielleure hit a leadoff double in the third, but was stranded at third, and it was not until the fourth that JU broke through.
Justin Nadeau smacked a single to right to start the inning, and took second on a wild pitch. With two away,
Colin Wetterau ripped one to right to plate Nadeau and get the Dolphins within four, 5-1.
KSU immediately responded in the bottom half, loading the bases with one-out thanks to two walks and a single and using another RBI groundout to build the lead back to five. In the fifth, things separated for good. Ten men came to the plate and five scored, with a bases clearing double, followed by an RBI double and a run scoring single to make it 11-1.
Kris Armstrong belted a home run to left in the top of the second, a two-run shot after
Elias Flowers had walked to start the frame, but KSU responded one last time, putting the first two men on in the bottom half and using a two-run double to win the shortened game in walkoff fashion, due to the 10-run rule in ASUN Conference games.
