MIAMI —The Jacksonville women's basketball team fell 71-74 to the Miami (FL) Hurricanes Monday night at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Dolphins (1-1) were led by senior guard
Edyn Battle's 21 points. Last season's Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Year has scored 20+ points in each of Jacksonville's games to start this season.
The Dolphins battled the Hurricanes throughout the first half. Behind Battle's 17 points, Jacksonville trailed by just five at the break. The Dolphins matched Miami's fast-paced offense, and they got to the line early and often in the game.
Jacksonville shot 12-14 from the charity stripe in the first half. The Dolphins also forced eight Hurricane turnovers and out-rebounded their ACC foes 18-16 at the break.
In the second half, Jacksonville continued to keep pace with Miami's attack. Battle turned from a leading scorer to a leading playmaker down the stretch. She dished several assists to set up the Dolphins with great looks at the hoop.
Senior guard
Priscilla Williams added a second-half spark with her shooting and defensive tenacity. She finished with 18 points and six rebounds.
The Dolphins kept fighting till the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Jacksonville pressed for baskets late, and behind the dynamic duo of Battle and Williams, had a chance to win at the end of the game.
Miami took a three-point lead after a pair of late free throws, but Jacksonville could still take the game to overtime. Battle's final 3-pointer fell just short, however, and the hosts took the victory.
