Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dolphins Roll at Home Against Mercer

The Jacksonville women's basketball team continued its undefeated start at home with a 74-49 win over the Mercer Bears.

The Dolphins (4-3) are now 3-0 at Swisher Gymnasium, and 11-5 on their home court under head coach Special Jennings. Jacksonville's 25-point win is its largest margin of victory under Jennings.

Graduate student forward Makayla Edwards led the way for Jacksonville. The veteran from Vallejo, California, scored 17 points. She caught fire behind the arc, hitting all three of her attempts from long range.

The first quarter was a tight battle. The Dolphins struggled from the field, but strong rebounding kept Jacksonville level after one. The second quarter broke things open for the Dolphins.

Edwards broke the offense out of its early shooting slump. She started a run with a triple, dished a quick assist then added another from long range to cap a quick 8-0 run to put Jacksonville in firm control.

The Dolphins shot 7-12 from the field in the second and outscored the Bears by nine points. Jacksonville kept its foot on the gas through the final two quarters.

In the third quarter, the Dolphins' defense put Mercer on lockdown. The Bears shot 28.6% from the field and turned the ball over three times. Jacksonville cooled down from the field, but did its damage from the free throw line, shooting 11-13 from the stripe in the third.

The fourth quarter was more of the same. Senior guard Edyn Battle finally got going from the field and the free throw line. She finished the game with 14 points. The Dolphins outscored Mercer by six in the final frame to close out their most dominant win of the season.
