JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Jacksonville (5-6) defeated Valparaiso (4-7) 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium.
Jacksonville walked it off when
Clayton Hodges delivered a single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Dolphins the win.Â
"It was a complete team effort," said head coach
Chris Hayes after the game. "We really fought hard until that last pitch and we needed it. Valparaiso did a great job today competing and making it tough on us."
The Dolphins started
Tommy Allman on the bump; he would finish with 4.1 innings pitched, seven strikeouts, four walks and gave up five hits. Allman gave up one earned run and was given a no decision.
The game opened with Jacksonville taking an early lead in the 1st inning as
Josh Steidl's double brought
Justin Nadeau across the plate, setting the tone early. The Dolphins extended their lead in the 2nd inning with a sacrifice fly from
Will Gale, bringing
Nick DeLisi home, followed by Nadeau's double that scored Tann Zellem, putting them ahead 3-0.
Valparaiso fought back in the 3rd inning as a Beacon double drove in a run, narrowing the gap to 3-1. However, Jacksonville responded swiftly in the 5th inning when Steidl's triple brought
Tyler Hinrikus home, furthering their lead to 4-1.
As the game progressed, Valparaiso staged a late-game rally in the 7th and 9th innings. In the 7th, a Beacons single narrowed the lead to 4-2. The intensity heightened in the 9th inning when a walk cut the lead to 4-3 Dolphins, and the Beacons were not finished in the inning. A two-RBI Beacon single put Valparaiso ahead for the first time in the game at 5-4.
With the game on the line in the bottom of the 9th, Jacksonville responded to the pressure.
Justin Nadeau's single drove in
Cade Hentz, tying the score at 5-5. Then, with runners in scoring position, Hodges delivered a clutch single to right field, bringing Ty Hinrikus home and sealing the victory for the Dolphins with a 6-5 walk-off win. Issac Williams got the win after coming out of the pen in the ninth.
"I feel like we played extremely well offensively," further added Hayes. "We played a clean game defensively and overall the strength of this team is the resiliency and the refusal to lay down and quit. It's great to come out of this game with a win."
